Our autonomous machines now may think at the speed of light and learn on their own, but they carry the DNA of Stone’s Living Clockwork: they are living in that they adapt and self-sustain, and clockwork in that they operate within knowable physical laws and constraints. Humanity stands in equilibrium with these new intelligences because we designed that equilibrium from the start – inspired by the way a humble clock stays in sync with the rotation of the Earth, or the way a governor stays in sync with an engine’s load. We recognized that to coexist with something powerful, one must share a common frame of reference and checks and balances. And so, in this visionary yet scientifically-grounded story, the mechanical past and the quantum future are unified. We began with ticking brass and end with whispering qubits, but the narrative thread – a commitment to ethics, energy autonomy, and harmony between human and machine – remains unbroken, a testament to the timeless principles of S.T.E.M. that guide our innovations.
