Abstract (English)

This material is a synthesis of the note “Anti-vaccine Disinformation in Latin America and the Caribbean: Mapping 175 Alleged Harms and 80 False Antidotes in Conspiracy Theory Communities on Telegram”, available through the European Union Open Research Repository. In addition to the English version that opens the technical note, the Portuguese version can be found in the second half of the same document. In this material, we present 175 alleged vaccine-related harms and 80 false antidotes identified within the extensive network of conspiracy theories that exist on Telegram. Altogether, this network comprises more than 80 million pieces of content, involving approximately 5.8 million users across around 1,800 groups and channels that promote conspiratorial narratives in nearly 20 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean. Based on these data, we applied network analyses, time series analyses, content analyses, and thematic overlap analyses to understand the circulation of these digital narratives and how they interconnect within the broader conspiratorial ecosystem.
