Abstract

The article examines the impact of colonial policy on pre-independence Malay socierty through the creative activity of Anthony Burgess. Here, British colonialism based on the ideology of integrative governance, religious approaches in society and the clash of east-west cultures are analyzed. Besides, the Malay society during the colonial period, the Europeans` thoughts about the Malays and, at the same time, the non-European literary critic`s opinions about that period and Anthony Burgess`s approach are mentioned. The article explores the differences between rulers and ruled, colonial ideology and colonial power. Depicted through a combination of characters from different origins such as Malays, Chinese and Indians, the administration of Malaysia shows the unifying role of government policy, education, change in thinking and self-criticism, patriotism and monarchy.
