Citation Ranking of Higher Education Institutions in the EU

This dataset presents the Citation Ranking of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the European Union, based on Google Scholar citation data collected in January 2025. It is an EU-specific list comprising 893 universities, ranked by the total number of citations received by their top academic researchers. The data originate from the global dataset “Transparent Ranking of Universities by the Number of Citations Received by the Google Scholar Profiles of Their Top Researchers,” which includes 6,191 HEIs worldwide and is published semiannually by the Cybermetrics Lab (IPP-CSIC, Spain). The EU-specific report highlights citation patterns across member states, identifies leading research universities such as KU Leuven, Karolinska Institutet, and the University of Copenhagen, and discusses regional disparities—most notably the “French Paradox.”
