Description

This article is part of the conference proceedings of the European Coatings Show Conference 2025 held in Nuremberg, Germany, on 25-27 March.

Abstract

BIO-SUSHY Horizon Europe project aims to develop 3 PFAS-free coating materials, partially or fully bio-based, to be validated in 3 case studies: textile; food; and glass packaging. In parallel with material development covering sol-gel and thermoplastic powder coatings, integration of safety and sustainability into the coating formulations using a multidisciplinary approach of existing experimental data, predictive models and data-driven simulations is covered from an early R&D phase. The highlights from the latest results on bio-based biodegradable thermoplastic powder coating formulations, PHA (Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) and PBS (Poly (Butylene Succinate)) with bio-based functional lignin-based fillers using electrostatic spray application and hot pressing technologies on paper substrates, will be presented. The results cover contact angle measurements, water repellency, water absorption, grease resistance, Gurley tests and thermoformability to food trays. In parallel, rapid identification of in vitro cell toxicity using a unique release flow cell and an electrochemical membrane screening platform is being carried out on the materials, formulations and coatings to further investigate their bioactive properties. These properties will be related to the MIE (Molecular Initiating Event) of each species.
