Description

Phthiarella scintilla Brailovsky and Barrera, new species

(Figs. 47‒48, 67, 104‒105)

Diagnosis. Phthiarella dedita sp. nov. and P. scintilla sp. nov., have the pronotal disk and legs entirely black tinged with bluish green reflections; and corium with wide yellowish to orange transverse fascia near middle third. In P. dedita sp. nov. the abdominal sterna III-IV are entirely metallic green, unlike in P. scintilla sp. nov. were the sternite III is entirely yellowish orange and IV yellowish orange with posterior margin metallic green.

Description. Holotype male. Body length 18.64. Head length 2.45; width across eyes 2.27; interocular distance 1.25; interocellar distance 0.62; preocular distance 1.30; length antennal segments: I, 4.28; II, 4.75; III, 3.44; IV 6.43; pronotum: total length 2.88; width across humeral angles 5.40; scutellum: length 1.97; width 2.10.

Dorsal coloration. Head metallic bluish green with short yellow spot behind each ocelli; antennal segments I–II black with metallic bluish green reflections, III–IV black; pronotum, scutellum and clavus black with metallic bluish green reflections; apex of claval commissure yellow; corium black with metallic bluish green reflections and wide yellowish transverse fascia near middle third behind claval commissure and reaching costal margins; hemelytral membrane dark brown; connexival segments III–V orange, VI–VII metallic green; dorsal abdominal segments III–V orange, VI–VII metallic green. Ventral coloration. Head metallic green; rostral segment I metallic green, II–IV dark brown; pro-, meso-, and metasternum yellow; pro-, meso-, and metapleura metallic green with inner border of meso-, and meta-acetabulae yellowish orange; anterior and posterior lobe of metathoracic peritreme yellowish orange; evaporative area black; coxae, trochanters, femora and tibiae black tinged with bluish green reflections; tarsi black; abdominal sternite III yellowish orange, IV yellowish orange with anterior margin metallic green and V–VII and genital capsule metallic green.

Structure. Head. Rostrum reaching middle third of abdominal sternite IV. Thorax. Humeral angles thick at base, tapering into short acute spine. Genital capsule. Posteroventral edge gently sinuate, lateral angles rounded, slightly folded inward (Fig. 67). Parameres. Figs. 104‒105.

Female. Unknown.

Etymology. From the Latin “ scintillus-a” meaning under light, referring to the attractive color.

Type locality. Brazil, Rondonia.

Material examined. Type material. HOLOTYPE male, BRAZIL, Rondonia, 62 km SE Ariquemes, Fazenda Rancho Grande, 165 m, 10.53°S – 62.80°W, 19–29–IX–1965, B. Harris (UNAM).
