The Role of Home Economics Programs on Student Life Skills: The Lived Experiences of Teachers

Description

This study explored the role of Home Economics programs in shaping the life skills of students in the elementary and secondary education levels. Specifically, it aimed to examine the lived experiences of students and teachers regarding how Home Economics contributes to the development of practical competencies such as financial literacy, nutrition and meal planning, household management, and basic livelihood skills. Using a qualitative, phenomenological approach, the study employed in-depth interviews 5 participants and focus group discussions 5 participants to gain deeper insights into the participants’ perspectives. Thematic analysis revealed several key findings. Students perceived Home Economics as highly relevant to real-life applications, boosting their confidence, independence, and problem-solving skills. Teachers, on the other hand, viewed the subject as a vital platform for values formation and preparing learners for future responsibilities. Despite its impact, the program faces challenges such as insufficient materials, limited instructional time, and outdated equipment. In response, educators employed strategies such as contextualized teaching, hands-on learning, and community partnerships. Three major themes emerged from an educational perspective: the life-enriching value of practical education, the transformative influence of skill-based learning, and the role of contextual relevance in student engagement.
