The Pedant's Commentary and the Polemicist's Footnote: The Value-Based Differentiation of Notions of Textual Apparatus in V.G. Belinsky's Criticism

This study analyzes the critical discourse of V.G. Belinsky, focusing on the modification of the concepts of commentary and footnote within it. In the context of the 1830s and 1840s literary criticism coming into force, Belinsky disqualifies authorial commentary as a practice, and designates the genre of commentary as a predominately factual investigation, contrasting it to the aesthetic criticism. In a similar way, in a critic’s discourse the notion of the footnote undergoes a transformation. Belinsky highlights the footnote is rather a prerogative space for polemic, retort, and engagement with the reader, than a hermeneutic tool.
Abstract (Russian)
В работе проведен анализ критического дискурса В.Г. Белинского и модификации в нем понятий комментария и выноски. В контексте специализации литературной критики В.Г. Белинским проводится дисквалификация авторского комментария посредством нарочитого акцентирования в нем фактографического компонента. С другой стороны, форма примечания меняет свой функционал, становясь местом полемики, реплики, общения с читателем, что отражается в употреблении критиком специального понятия выноски.
