The role of tempo and rhythmic patterns in minimalist composition: how simple volumes lead to complex structural dynamics

This article explores the key role of tempo and rhythmic patterns in shaping the structural dynamics and perception of minimalist music. It analyzes how manipulations with tempo (such as stability, gradual acceleration, or deceleration) and rhythmic modulation processes (such as phase shifts, additive processes, and polyrhythmia) transform static sounds into complex systems. Through the examples of Steve Reich, Terry Riley, and Philip Glass, the article demonstrates that tempo-rhythmic organization is a primary dramatic tool. It is concluded that the minimalist composition is a phenomenon for the study of time and perception.
Abstract (Russian)
В данной статье исследуется ключевая роль темпа и ритмических паттернов в формировании структурной динамики и восприятия музыки минимализма. Анализируется, как манипуляции с темпом (его стабильность, постепенное ускорение или замедление) и процессы ритмической модуляции (сдвиг фаз, аддитивный процесс, полиритмия) трансформируют статичные звуков в сложные системы. На примере произведений Стива Райха, Терри Райли и Филипа Гласса показано, что именно темпо-ритмическая организация является первичным драматургическим средством. Делается вывод о том, что минималистическая композиция представляет собой феномен для изучения времени и восприятия.
