SDF-Field Synthesis: A Novel Paradigm for Procedural 3D Rendering

  • 1. Independent Researcher

Description

This paper presents the SDF-Field Synthesis method, a new approach for rendering scenes defined by Signed Distance Functions (SDF). The method retains key advantages of SDF — compactness, procedural generation, boolean operations, infinite resolution, and automatic normals — while eliminating limitations of classical ray marching: discrete intersection search, low efficiency in empty space, and lack of coherence between neighboring pixels.

The method is based on solving a visibility field equation, where the SDF defines the potential source. Field isosurfaces correspond to visible object boundaries. Adaptive grids and multigrid methods are used, allowing faster computation and maintaining an analytic scene representation.
