Description

The SensorThings API (STA) from the Open Geospatial Consortium has become a quasi-standard for publishing time-series data from sensor systems on the web. Due to its lightweight and generic data model, STA is being adopted across a wide range of domains.

However, many applications—especially in the environmental sciences—require additional metadata, for example about projects or campaigns, responsible persons and affiliations, data providers, data quality, or detailed information on sensor deployments. While STA recommends describing such information in the properties fields of its entities, this approach often results in inconsistent and non-interoperable metadata.

To address this, we provide a set of extended, well-defined JSON Schemas that standardize the usage of STA properties. These schemas enable richer and more consistent metadata integration into STA infrastructures in a structured and interoperable way. To ensure machine-readability and alignment with broader standards, we rely on definitions from schema.org, and adopt widely used specifications such as JSON-Schema and JSON-LD.
