Description
The commercial farming of darkling beetles has only recently begun in Bangladesh, although this practice has already been widely established in many parts of the world, particularly in Europe. Within the European Union, darkling beetles have been formally recognized as a “novel food,” and numerous farms operate under regulated systems. In Bangladesh, however, commercial production is still at an early stage. Local entrepreneurs, often through social media platforms, have initiated small-scale farming ventures on an individual basis. Despite these efforts, no comprehensive scientific research on darkling beetle farming has yet been undertaken in the country. Consequently, farmers frequently encounter difficulties in addressing farming-related challenges due to the absence of expert guidance. Recognizing this gap, Sylhet Agricultural University has, for the first time in Bangladesh, initiated systematic research on darkling beetle farming. The findings of that research are documented in this book. Nevertheless, it is important to highlight a critical caution: in developed countries, beetle farming is carried out strictly under regulatory frameworks to ensure both safety and sustainability. In contrast, Bangladeshi farmers are practicing this cultivation without adhering to such guidelines, creating potential risks for the future. Research indicates that variations in farming methods can directly influence both the safety and quality of the product. Therefore, strict adherence to standardized regulations is essential for sustainable development of the sector. Without proper regulation, darkling beetle farming in Bangladesh may fail to provide safe and reliable poultry feed and could undermine its potential as a future export commodity, capable of generating significant foreign exchange earnings for the country.
