Description

The Responsible Research Conversations at TU/e (event page | Cursor article | slide deckbrings together researchers and professional staff to showcase and strengthen TU/e’s growing ecosystem of responsible research practices. This gathering reflects and supports several TU/e strategic priorities - including Open Science, Recognition & Rewards, social safety, research integrity, sustainability, and talent development - by connecting community members already working on these topics and encouraging others to engage.
As TU/e advances toward its 2030 vision, fostering a culture of talent development, collaboration, and resilience is more crucial than ever. These values are inseparable from the way we conduct research: responsibly, honestly, and openly. Responsible research is not just a compliance requirement - it is a shared opportunity to build a stronger, more collaborative, and future-ready university.

This event offers a platform to:
• Advance the discussion on overlapping concepts, principles, and communities (e.g., responsible research practices, research integrity, open science, social safety)
• Celebrate the work of TU/e researchers and professionals advancing responsible research
• Foster academic citizenship and interdisciplinary collaboration
• Strengthen TU/e’s position as a national and international leader in research culture

Alongside the panel and discussion sessions, the morning will feature a rich mix of interactive presentations and hands-on workshops. Participants can explore what open and responsible scholarly practices look like in practice, try out a pilot training on responsible research assessment, and play the Full Circle game to experience dilemmas around integrity and collaboration. Curious about the sustainability of your own project? Join Impact Unpacked to find out. Those working with data can learn how to preserve it responsibly in Farewell my FAIR data or discover new support services such as TU/e’s Product Area Research team. Tools like PaperCheck will be introduced to help strengthen best practices in publishing. Finally, several TU/e communities - including the Open Science Community, the Eindhoven Meta-Science Center, the Sustainability Office, and the Career Development Policy team - will present their projects and invite you to connect (presented by Kristina Korshunova, Krist Vaesen, Liz Guzman Ramirez, Adelya Doudart de la Grée, Jolanda Oomen, Julma Braat, Lieke van Gorp, Henny van Alphen, Lotte Meijer-Tolkamp, Rita Vasconcellos Lopes D'Oliveira Bouman).

Agenda:
08:45 - Opening by Jolien Strous
09:00 - Panel discussion with Vlasta Sikimić, Julma Braat, and Silvia Lenaerts
09:45 -Interactive community presentations
10:45 - Parallel workshops and hackathons
12:00 - View from the outside with Tamarinde Haven and Andrea Kis, followed by closing remarks
13:00 - Lunch

Doors open at 08:30. The event is free for all TU/e community members but please register to help our planning.
Workshop registration forms will be sent to those who registered for the event.

Preliminary information:

Open and Responsible Scholarly Practices (Kristina Korshunova)
This interactive workshop aims to explore different open and responsible scholarly practices. Working in small groups, participants will discuss cards with practices related to open and responsible science, as well as open education. Together, you will discuss which practices are easy or difficult to implement and whether they are already part of your work. The activity helps to break down big concepts into concrete examples, highlights what participants are already doing and what they can start doing in their future practice.

Beyond Research: Diversifying Academic Profiles (Klara Strecker, Andrea Kis, Julma Braat)
Academic careers are traditionally measured by research output, yet contributions in education, leadership, and societal impact are just as vital for a responsible and meaningful research culture. In this interactive workshop, you will explore the four key dimensions of academic profiles, reflect on your current and desired balance, and discuss how we might better recognise and showcase diverse strengths. Together, we will imagine fairer ways of living and assessing academic performance and valuing the breadth of talent within TU/e.

Full Circle: The Game (Ellen de Greef-Daamen, Corlien van Dam, Janna Heynen-Behnke)
At work, we all encounter situations where opinions and values differ. What one person finds acceptable might feel uncomfortable to someone else. And when we’re busy or don’t fully explain ourselves, misunderstandings or tension can arise. Full Circle is a board game designed to help teams navigate these moments together. Instead of judging or debating, you’ll share your views, listen to others, and discover new perspectives - all in a safe, respectful space. There are no right or wrong answers - just honest conversations that help you understand your colleagues better.

Impact Unpacked: How Sustainable is your Project? (Rita Vasconcellos Lopes D'Oliveira Bouman, Tommaso Mondovi)
Given today’s pressing challenges, sustainability and transparency in (research) projects are key. In this 1-hour workshop, participants will explore the impact and relevance of their project across the three main pillars of sustainability: Environment, Society, and Economy. They will uncover hidden positive contributions and reflect on ways to mitigate adverse ones. No preparation is required - just bring your best understanding of what your project represents and stands for.

Introducing PaperCheck: A Software Tool to Check Scientific Papers for Best Practices (Cristian Mesquida Caldentey)
PaperCheck is a software tool to automatically assess scientific papers for adherence to best practices. PaperCheck screens manuscripts to identify potential issues, highlight areas for improvement, and guide researchers in adopting rigorous practices. The package is also suitable for processing large numbers of papers for metascientific analyses. Beyond researchers, it can be used by librarians or other stakeholders to, for example, determine whether studies published by university researchers share data and code. The workshop will begin with a brief introduction to PaperCheck, covering how it works and the philosophy behind it, followed by a hands-on demonstration illustrating how the package can be used effectively.

Farewell my FAIR data: Data Curation and Preservation as a Responsible Research Practice (Adelya Doudart de la Grée, Nami Sunami, Siyang Kong)
Adopting responsible data management practices throughout your research may fall short if no closure is given to the data supporting your research findings after the project ends. Instead of letting research data slowly decay and be forgotten, let’s celebrate and give it a good send-off! Join our metaphorical farewell party for practical guidance and solutions that will ensure your data is FAIR and succeeds in continuing its journey! We’ll show you how to make your data compliant to ethical and institutional regulations along with simple techniques to enhance its quality - making your data future-proof for re-use and verification.

Narrative CV: Beyond the Bullets (Laura Pander, Esther Philips)
In this workshop the Personal Grants Team of the TU/e will share their experiences with the recent developments regarding the narrative CV in research proposals. These experiences could be interesting for both academics and professional staff: whether you apply for a funding proposal in academia or a job opening in industry, nowadays you are encouraged to include narratives and context to explain your career path and experience. We will show examples but also include an exercise to put participants to work.

Acknowledgements for additional contributions: the Open Science Community Eindhoven (OSC/e), Lisa Idebolo, Maarten Hornikx, Vera Kools, Barbara Leitner, Sindy Harks, LaLuna Kon, our HRM colleagues, and members of the Eindhoven Meta-Science Center (META/e).
