O Dragão no Imaginário Medieval: Entre o Mal Cósmico e o Guardião de Tesouros

O dragão constituiu uma das imagens mais marcantes do imaginário medieval europeu, presente em narrativas hagiográficas, épicas cavaleirescas e representações artísticas. Este artigo investiga as origens, os significados e as funções simbólicas atribuídas ao dragão, considerando influências da Antiguidade, do Oriente e da tradição cristã. Argumenta-se que a figura do dragão condensava o medo do desconhecido, o combate espiritual contra o mal e a função de guardião de tesouros, sendo ao mesmo tempo inimigo demoníaco e desafio heroico.

Abstract

The dragon was one of the most powerful and recurrent images of the European medieval imagination, appearing in hagiographic narratives, chivalric epics, and artistic representations. This article examines the origins, meanings, and symbolic functions of the dragon, considering influences from Antiquity, the Orient, and Christian tradition. It argues that the dragon condensed the fear of the unknown, the spiritual battle against evil, and the role of guardian of treasures, being at once a demonic enemy and a heroic challenge.
