El papel como soporte del concepto artístico
Description
Abstract
This study examines paper as a fundamental support for artistic conception during the Early Modern period through two exceptional documents preserved in the Diocese of Plasencia: the design for a public fountain from 1609 and the design for a Rococo altarpiece from 1785. These cases show that paper was not merely a drafting material but an essential medium for recording technical, iconographic, and contractual decisions. The research explains the legal framework of both works—public tender in the case of the fountain and contractual obligation for the altarpiece—revealing how paper ensured proper execution and oversight of artistic commissions. The study also analyzes the material features of paper, the use of metal-acid inks, and the conservation issues arising from humidity, biological agents, and past handling. Stylistically, it highlights the transition from the Herrerian architectural rigor seen in the fountain to the late Rococo with Neoclassical influences present in the altarpiece of Santa Lucía. Among the most significant contributions is the demonstration that paper served as an indispensable tool for designing, formalizing, and preserving artistic works, as well as the recognition of these documents as primary sources for art history and restoration practices.
