The Open Science Learning GATE - Supporting Capacity Building
Authors/Creators
Description
This presentation was given at the ENRIO Congress 2025 in Ljubljana.
It highlights the work of the Open Science Learning GATE (GATE) and its benefits for the Open Science (OS) community.
GATE is an important initiative that strengthens capacity building in the field of Open Science (OS) and promotes its adoption within specific communities by developing tailored solutions to support effective implementation.
GATE's goals:
1. UNDERSTANDING OS - how is it today:
First, the GATE life cycle is presented and explained why the information provided by GATE (guiding thoughts and practices stressed by OS knowledge creators) is particularly important for all OS stakeholders: GATE continuously provides community-based knowledge about OS. This enables OS communities to take action: educators can optimise their materials, infrastructures can upgrade their systems, and funders and policymakers can align their policies accordingly.
2. UNDERSTANDING OS - how it evolves:
The metaphor of evolution also illustrates how important it is to be aware of the evolving research landscape. In particular, this enables us to respond to developments in the long term, whether they be political or technological changes.
3. DOING OS:
GATE not only wants to understand OS, but also to support OS communities and practitioners in doing OS: The presentation shows examples of concrete proposals for targeted solutions that were developed in previous workshops (You'll find more details in this publication: https://zenodo.org/records/15878607).
The presentation concludes with an invitation for knowledge creators and a look at GATE's research corner and intended goals for the future:
Engage with GATE Service:
Knowledge creators are invited to share their knowledge on OS via the GATE Service (https://mik2024.limesurvey.net/586981?lang=en) and benefit from:
- Find out which guiding thoughts are currently being emphasised by others
- Receive guidance to optimise your materials
- Be named as author of high-quality OS materials in the GATE Report
- Enhance visibility of your materials
Research:
- Qualitative analysis
- Building formal vocabularies (reiterating the GATE process in order to achieve consistent vocabulary)
- Use Knowledge graph models to organise the GATE data incl. their semantic relationships
Further proceedings:
- Enhance qualitative richness
- proceed community participation including needs assessment
- Developing stakeholder-specific outputs
- GATE Report to become an ontology (representation of OS fields, good practices, and relations between these practices)
