Description

This qualitative and interpretive study uses the epistemologies of Paulo Freire and Mikhail Bakhtin as a theoretical-methodological framework to analyze the manifestation and intertwining of the multiple meanings of Freire’s concept of conscientization in the lyrics of the song “Alienação,” by the Afro Block Ilê Aiyê. Analyzing the composition as a pedagogical tool and an expression of political resistance, the research employed Dialogical Discourse Analysis to examine the song as an act of responsivity that dialogues with racial and identity issues and responds to the oppressive conditions experienced by the Black population in Brazil. The song was selected as the corpus due to its thematic relevance, serving as an artistic utterance that promotes critical reflections. The conceptual scope of conscientization covers awareness of the national reality, the stages of consciousness, class consciousness, and consciousness of multiple subjectivities. The results demonstrate that the four meanings of the concept of conscientization coexist and complement one another within the musical narrative. The analysis of the lyrics reveals the autonomy of each meaning, as well as their integration for a broader understanding of the Black social landscape. The study concludes that the song “Alienação” constitutes a political and pedagogical tool that reinforces the Freirean principle of connecting theoretical knowledge to the popular cultural universe, highlighting the continued relevance of Paulo Freire´s pedagogy in the current context.
