Description
Mushroom production has emerged as a rapidly expanding agribusiness with significant contributions to
nutrition, food security, the circular bio economy, and climate-smart agriculture. Among cultivated mushrooms,
oyster (Pleurotus spp.) and button mushrooms (Agaricusbisporus) hold paramount importance due to their
wide acceptance, ease of cultivation, and market value. This review synthesizes knowledge on substrates,
supplements, sustainability, and innovations, with emphasis on practical cultivation workflows, quality and
safety, and value chains. Evidence is consolidated from global and Indian contexts and supported by peerreviewed literature (2010–2024). Finally, research gaps and policy directions are outlined.
