The article examines the key challenges facing the Ukrainian energy sector and explores global energy development trends in the 21st century, emphasizing the growing importance of bioenergy. It highlights Ukraine's significant bioenergy potential, driven by the availability of diverse biomass resources such as agricultural residues, forest biomass, energy crops, livestock waste, and industrial organic waste. A list of fast-growing energy crops suitable for cultivation in Ukraine is provided, alongside an analysis of key biomass-to-energy conversion technologies, including anaerobic fermentation, pyrolysis, gasification, combustion, fermentation, and esterification. The article underscores the strategic advantages of advancing bioenergy in Ukraine, including reduced dependence on imported energy, environmental benefits, rural development, job creation, increased investment attractiveness, and technological modernization of the energy sector. However, it also identifies significant barriers hindering the growth of the bioenergy industry, such as insufficient financing, outdated infrastructure, technological gaps, ineffective legislation, and competition from imported energy sources. To overcome these challenges, the article recommends adopting best practices from countries with successful bioenergy programs, including state and local budget subsidies, tax incentives, government investments, and grants for infrastructure development. It calls for a comprehensive strategy to support the industry, focusing on developing bioenergy infrastructure, simplifying licensing and regulatory processes, establishing national standards for bioenergy installations, and ensuring environmental compliance. Additionally, it emphasizes the need for research funding, support for startups and innovative companies, and attracting international investors and partners through participation in global technology exchange programs. These measures aim to unlock Ukraine’s bioenergy potential and enhance its energy sustainability.
