Ahmed Shawqi: Exile, Nationalism, and the Shaping of Modern Arabic Literature

The research investigates Ahmed Shawqi's (1868–1932) life and literary achievements and cultural impact as the “Prince of Poets” who became a leading figure in contemporary Arabic literature. The research investigates how Shawqi developed his poetry through his Egyptian and European education which exposed him to both Arab heritage and Western intellectual traditions. The paper focuses on how his time in exile influenced his nationalistic voice and his use of poetry to express cultural and political ideas during colonial times. The research evaluates selected poems and dramatic works to show how Shawqi united traditional poetic structures with contemporary themes which preserved artistic heritage while creating new literary possibilities. The paper investigates how Shawqi left a lasting impact on Arab poetic traditions and dramatic writing and intellectual developments of the Nahda (Arab Renaissance) movement. The research demonstrates that Shawqi's literary work represents both the conflicting elements of exile and nationalism while demonstrating the potential for cultural fusion which defined Arabic literature during the modern era.

يستقصي هذا البحث حياة أحمد شوقي (1868–1932) وإنجازاته الأدبية وأثره الثقافي باعتباره "أمير الشعراء" وأحد أبرز الشخصيات في الأدب العربي المعاصر. يبحث البحث في كيفية تطور شعر شوقي من خلال تعليمه في مصر وأوروبا، الذي مكَّنه من الاطلاع على التراث العربي والتقاليد الفكرية الغربية على حد سواء. ويركز البحث على تأثير فترة المنفى على صوته الوطني، وكيف استخدم الشعر للتعبير عن الأفكار الثقافية والسياسية خلال الحقبة الاستعمارية. كما يقيم البحث مختارات من قصائده وأعماله المسرحية لإظهار كيفية توفيق شوقي بين الهياكل الشعرية التقليدية والموضوعات المعاصرة، بما يحفظ التراث الفني ويخلق إمكانيات أدبية جديدة. ويستقصي البحث الأثر الدائم لشوقي على التقاليد الشعرية العربية والكتابة المسرحية والتطورات الفكرية لحركة النهضة العربية. ويُظهر البحث أن أعمال شوقي الأدبية تمثل العناصر المتضاربة للمنفى والوطنية، في الوقت الذي تبرز فيه الإمكانيات المحتملة للاندماج الثقافي التي ميزت الأدب العربي في العصر الحديث.
