The Kangra Agricultural System a GIAHS Perspective on Heritage and Resilience.

Description
This book grew from a close look at the landscapes, rivers, and fields of Himachal Pradesh. The Kangra Valley and its agricultural traditions have been described often, but the irrigation system of Kuhls has usually been treated in a narrow frame either as a technical structure or a social arrangement. What is offered here is a broader view that connects the Kuhls with the geology, geomorphology, and geography of the Kangra Basin.
Kuhls are seen in this wider context, the Kuhls are more than channels of water. They are living links between mountain slopes, rivers, and farming communities. Terraces, outwash plains, and alluvial fans do not merely form the backdrop to agriculture they actively shape the design, flow, and resilience of irrigation.
This perspective represents a shift in Kuhl studies. Instead of being examined only through anthropology or engineering, the system is placed within the physical environment that sustains it. Such an approach deepens the understanding of its history while strengthening the case for its recognition under the FAO‘s Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS).
The knowledge and practices of Kangra‘s farming communities remain at the heart of this story. Generations have kept the Kuhls alive through daily use, cooperation, and memory. Their role is as essential as the rivers that feed the channels. Author of book has created a website geohimachal.com for wider preservation of Kangra Kuhls
