Female entrepreneurship in Ghana: factors of entrepreneurial success towards women entrepreneurs
Description
Researchers have devoted considerable times and effort to ascertain the drivers of
entrepreneurial success. Entrepreneurship scholars believe that entrepreneurial success is
dependent on a plethora of factors including prevailing economic conditions, business climate
among others. Entrepreneurship has been largely studied as generic term to reflect both men and
women entrepreneurs with much emphasis on the men. This study, with particular emphasis on
women in Ghana, focused on women entrepreneurs by exploring the factors that make them
successful entrepreneurs.
This research employed a quantitative approach. Hypothesis were developed and tested to
draw conclusion for the study. In testing the hypothesis, the researcher obtained data by
administering questionnaire to the respondents of the study. One hundred and fifty women
entrepreneurs were sampled for the study. The respondents were conveniently selected from the
Greater Accra and the Ashanti Regions of Ghana which are the economically dominant regions
in Ghana. Literature was reviewed using data from journal articles, scholarly books, and
documents. The questionnaire was administered through Google Forms. The researcher
employed Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) as a tool for the analysis of the primary
data.
The analysis revealed that personality traits significantly impact the success of Ghanaian
women entrepreneurs. The findings further showed that the competency of women entrepreneurs
significantly impacts their success. The study established that the availability of resources,
including funding, to women entrepreneurs significantly influence the success of their
entrepreneurial ventures. The study recommended that Governmental and non-governmental
organisations in Ghana should engage women entrepreneurs in seminars, workshops, and
conferences to improve their competencies and performance. Women entrepreneurs in Ghana
should be supported with resources such as finance and equipment to grow their businesses. The
Government of Ghana should create enabling environment for women entrepreneurs to operate
through tax waivers, tax holidays, provision of land, fast-tracking businesses registration, and
improving exchange rates.
