Eurobarometer on Food Safety 2025 - EU27 and IPA countries
Authors/Creators
Description
This Special Eurobarometer, commissioned by EFSA, examines Europeans’ perceptions of and attitudes towards food safety and provides insights in terms of:
• Europeans’ interest in food safety-related topics and factors affecting food-related decisions;
• Awareness of and main concerns about food-safety topics, as well as attitudes towards healthy diet and food-related risks;
• Main information channels on food-related risks;
• Levels of trust in different actors from farm to fork;
• Awareness of different aspects of the EU food safety system;
• Behaviour in the area of food safety, using an example of a foodborne disease outbreak.
The survey was carried out by Varian in the 27 EU Member States and the 7 Preaccession countries between 25th March and 10th May 2025. A total of 33,309 respondents from different social and demographic groups were interviewed face-to-face at home in their mother tongue. In countries where using only face-to-face interviewing was not feasible due to the impact of COVID-19, online interviews were also used to supplement face-to-face ones.
The methodology used is that of the Standard Eurobarometer surveys carried out by the Directorate-General for Communication. It is the same for all countries and territories covered in the survey.

The datasets published are distributed as follows:
C251004607.1.3_Food safety_2025_CSV_v2_data.csv: Microdata
C251004607.1.3_Food safety_2025_CSV_datamap.xlsx: Variable Labels
#------------------------------------------------------------------#
Volume A: For each question/item asked in the questionnaire
and for all standard constructed variables, a table is included containing
(labelled) frequencies and means or other synthetic indicators including elementary
bivariate statistics describing distribution patterns of weighted replies for each country
or territory and for weighted EU results.
Volume AA: For each question/item asked in the
questionnaire and for all standard constructed variables, a table is included
containing (labelled) frequencies and means or other synthetic indicators including
elementary bivariate statistics describing distribution patterns of weighted replies for
groups of countries specified by the contracting authority and for weighted EU results.
Volume AP: "Trends/countries/territories/EU": For each question/item (whole questionnaire) and for all standard constructed variables, a table containing shifts compared to the previous poll in weighted frequencies and means
or other synthetic indicators including elementary bivariate statistics describing
distribution patterns of replies; shifts for each country or territory and for weighted EU
results.
Volume AAP: "Trends of groups of countries/EU": For each question/item (whole
questionnaire) and for all standard constructed variables used in the previous poll, a
table containing shifts compared to the previous poll in weighted frequencies and means
or other synthetic indicators including elementary bivariate statistics describing
distribution patterns of replies; shifts for each groups of countries foreseen in Volume
AA (under point b) above) and for weighted EU results.
Volume B: "socio-demographics/EU": For each question/item (whole questionnaire) and
for all standard constructed variables, a table containing (labelled) frequencies and
means or other synthetic indicators including elementary bivariate statistics describing
distribution patterns of replies for the EU as a whole weighted and cross-tabulated by
some 20 socio-demographic, socio-political or other variables, depending on the request
from the contracting authority.
Volume BP: "Trends of socio-demographics/EU": For each question/item (whole
questionnaire) and for all standard constructed variables used in the previous poll, a
table containing shifts compared to the previous poll in (weighted) frequencies and
means (or other synthetic indicators including elementary bivariate statistics describing
distribution patterns of replies); shifts for each country or territory foreseen in Volume
B (under point e) above) and for (weighted) results.
Volume C: "socio-demographics/country or territory": For each question/item (whole
questionnaire) and for all standard constructed variables, a table containing (labelled)
weighted frequencies and means or other synthetic indicators including elementary
bivariate statistics describing distribution patterns of replies for each country or territory
surveyed separately and cross-tabulated by some 20 socio-demographic, socio-political
or other variables (including a regional breakdown).
Volume C: For each question/item asked more than once ("trend questions")
and for all standard constructed variables used in the previous poll, a table
containing all data from the previous polls, if available and possible since the questions
was first asked, in weighted frequencies and means or other synthetic indicators
including elementary bivariate statistics describing distribution patterns of replies;
