Description

Seafood mislabeling and species substitution pose significant challenges to food authenticity, consumer trust, and public health. qPCR (quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction) offers a sensitive and specific approach for identifying fish species in raw, processed, and mixed seafood products. By targeting species-specific DNA sequences, qPCR can rapidly authenticate products within hours, preventing fraudulent substitution and ensuring compliance with labeling regulations. Its application also supports the protection of endangered species, traceability in the supply chain, and fair market competition. Integrating qPCR into national seafood monitoring programs will enhance consumer confidence, protect economic interests, and strengthen regulatory oversight. This policy brief highlights the urgent need for standardized qPCR protocols and strategic investment to enable reliable fish species authentication at scale.
