Description

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technology has revolutionized food safety by enabling the rapid, sensitive, and specific detection of foodborne pathogens. Integrating PCR-based diagnostics into national food security programs can significantly reduce the risk of foodborne outbreaks and protect public health. However, its adoption remains uneven across regions due to infrastructure gaps, high implementation costs, and limited technical expertise. This policy brief outlines strategies to scale up PCR applications, including capacity building, standardization of testing protocols, and sustainable funding models. Strengthening PCR networks will enhance early warning systems, ensure faster outbreak response, and improve consumer confidence in food safety systems, aligning with national goals of health security and sustainable food production.
