Development of a Nutrient-Dense Infant Porridge Based on Local Ingredients in Kinshasa (DRC): The Hamba's Society Model
Authors/Creators
Description
Infant malnutrition is a pressing issue in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where approximately 10% of children under five suffer from acute malnutrition (UNICEF, 2024). Existing porridges in the Congolese market often lack adequate protein density, rely heavily on refined cereals, and contain additives and added sugars, which compromise their nutritional quality. This study describes the formulation of a novel infant porridge by Hamba’s Society, based on wheat, maize, soybeans, peanuts, and caterpillars (Mbizo). The product is designed to provide high-quality proteins, essential micronutrients (iron, zinc, vitamin B12), and a shelf life of 12 months, using locally available ingredients. This porridge offers an affordable, culturally accepted, and nutritionally superior alternative to both imported infant flours and traditional porridges in Kinshasa.
