Lecture "Citizen Science in the Humanities and Social Sciences" (BA 1st year)

  • 1. ROR icon Maastricht University

Description

This lecture centres on citizen science and related forms of engagement as a public good, from its early roots in 19th century initiatives to present-day digital projects. The lecture will discuss how the concept of citizen science relates to other forms of public involvement in the academic community, and it will present examples of projects that are currently using citizen science as an instrument to break down barriers of knowledge and question traditional hierarchies. Based on the Letters 1916-1923 project, we will also discuss ethical and technical challenges. Tools and platforms developed specifically for citizen engagement are also mentioned to give the students a starting point for their own exploration and future projects.
