Description
This paper explores the biblical ethical response to the growing prevalence of divorce in contemporary society, with a specific focus on Nigeria. Amid rising global and national divorce rates, the paper investigates whether divorce aligns with God’s will as revealed through Scripture. It begins by identifying key causes of modern divorce ___ including infidelity, infertility, sexual incompatibility, and domestic abuse ____ before examining biblical texts that address marriage and divorce. Drawing from both Old and New Testament teachings, and engaging with scholarly interpretations and ethical frameworks, the paper argues that Scripture consistently upholds marriage as a lifelong covenant instituted by God. While acknowledging ongoing debates around texts such as Matthew 19:9 and the "exception clause," the study concludes that divorce contradicts the biblical vision for marriage, except in cases such as abuse where moral responsibility may necessitate protective separation. Ultimately, the paper affirms that the Bible does not support divorce as a normative solution, and encourages a return to biblical ethics as a foundation for marital fidelity, restoration, and holistic well-being.
