Ecological and Economic Determinants of Happiness in MINT Countries: A Clustering-Based Approach
Abstract
This study aims to investigate the impact of urban factors on the happiness of the population in MINT countries. In this context, the study analyses the impact of environmental, economic and social variables on individuals' life satisfaction. In the study, countries were categorized into groups with similar characteristics using the K-means clustering analysis method using data from 2010 to 2022. Using the elbow method, the ideal number of clusters was determined to be three, and countries were divided into three clusters accordingly. As a result of the analysis, Indonesia and Nigeria are in the first cluster with similar economic and environmental characteristics; Mexico, with high happiness and economic prosperity, is in the second cluster; and Turkey, which has unemployment and environmental problems despite its high gross domestic product (GDP), is in the third cluster. The results show that economic growth alone is not enough to increase happiness; factors such as unemployment rate and environmental pollution significantly affect individuals' life satisfaction. Moreover, the happiness of individuals in countries with low carbon emissions is also found to vary according to economic conditions. These findings emphasise that environmental and social indicators, as well as economic data, should be taken into account when designing sustainable urbanisation and welfare policies.
