Large Bronze Buddha Statue, Thailand (Late Sukhothai–Early Ayutthaya, 15th Century) – Inscribed '27 11 11 / LL / 42

This extended research and documentation report presents a large seated bronze Buddha statue from Thailand, dated to the transitional period between late Sukhothai and early Ayutthaya (ca. 1450–1550). The figure stands approximately 75 cm tall and weighs about 13.5 kg, cast via traditional lost-wax technique. It depicts the Buddha in Bhumisparsha mudra (earth-touching gesture), combining the refined elegance of Sukhothai with the monumentality characteristic of early Ayutthaya sculpture.

The underside of the base bears archival inscriptions—“27 11 11 / LL / 42”— sharply oxidized and embedded in the patina, likely dating to 27 November 1911 and indicative of early 20th-century temple inventory practices. Such provenance markers are exceptionally rare and enhance the object’s scholarly and cultural value.

Microscopic and UV analysis confirmed a multilayered patina (malachite, azurite, cuprite), mineral encrustations, and traces of original fire-gilding, with no evidence of modern interventions.

Comparative studies with similar bronzes in major museums and auction records support a valuation of €111 127—this figure is symbolically tied to the inscription “27 11 11.”
