From Silence to Dialogue: The Individual and Societal Impacts of Events by Jäbät ja Tunteet

Creators

Description

This thesis explores how the Finnish community Jäbät ja Tunteet promotes emotional expression and challenges dominant masculinity norms through its Conversation Clubs. Drawing on qualitative interviews with nine participants, the study investigates the individual and societal benefits of attending these male-only peer support events. The research applies Masculinity Theory, Critical Positive Masculinity and Social Identity Theory to examine how structured, emotionally supportive environments can foster personal growth and cultural transformation.

Thematic analysis revealed that participants experienced increased emotional literacy, trust, and community belonging. These clubs not only helped men better understand and express their emotions, but also encouraged them to carry these practices into broader social contexts, creating ripple effects in friendships, families, and workplaces. The clubs were found to act both as sites of healing and as catalysts for cultural change—offering a counter-narrative to hegemonic masculinity. However, challenges remain in reaching more emotionally disengaged men and in balancing self-reflection with broader social responsibility.

This study contributes to academic discussions in gender studies, culture and event management, and community engagement. It also offers practical insights for organizers and facilitators aiming to design inclusive, transformative event formats that support healthier emotional norms among men.
