Between Embodiments: Diversifying Views on Displacement Through Open-Mindedness
Authors/Creators
Description
Rigid definitions of displacement in the mainstream are not effective in accompanying the current meanings of the human experience. In response to this, through cooperation with personal reflections and theoretical methodologies, this paper attempts to explore the radically embedded bodily and mental experiences of displacement and their spatial intersections. In terms of situatedness, I discuss that displacement is a socio-psychological and spatial construct that permeates all aspects of life, shaping both individual and collective experiences with the lived space. Motivated by personal experiences and the urgency we currently experience within the sociocultural contemporary dimension, I advocate for a significant paradigm shift in our treatment of displaced narratives and the individuals inhabiting them. This shift involves exploring the mind as an active agent, and the body as a vessel. Here I propose multi-dimensionalizing open-mindedness. When open-mindedness is viewed through the lens of spatiality, the interplay between physical, imagined, and emotional spaces becomes evident, thereby shaping experiences of transformation and transition. This is to emphasize both the relational dynamics of our social sphere and the personal commitment to engage in critical self-reflection. Then, I argue that these components are interconnected within the context of individual and collective narratives. All these notions are brought together by cultural criticism and artistic expression in pursuance of breaking down the different embodiments of displacement as an alternative approach to knowledge production. This agency avoids imposing a singular narrative, instead recognizing its diverse manifestations and embracing self-reflection and social situatedness as an essential element. By reorganizing the relationality of these views, while fostering new forms of individual and collective agencies through interactive reflection between objectivity and subjectivity, I conclude this paper with an expectation to open up a dialogue about the need to adopt alternative and interdisciplinary perspectives for diversifying our views on displacement.
