Description

Quantifies land capital in the Swiss cantons: values, income and transfers by income and owner categories.

The report “Natural Capital of Switzerland” (Schläpfer & Lobsiger 2024) provided an overview of Switzerland's market-traded natural capital and the returns on this capital at an aggregate level. According to the calculations, the most valuable part of this natural capital is the land used for construction. Based on conservative assumptions, the annual yield from this land was estimated at around CHF 130 billion (for the period from the end of 2016 to the end of 2021).

This report supplements the calculations for Switzerland with additional calculations at the cantonal level. The report is based on the methods used in the 2024 report. Only methodological deviations from the calculations at the national level have been documented. All figures for land (building land) presented in the previous report were also calculated for the cantons. For reasons of space, however, only the most important cantonal results are presented here.
