Description

This report aims at carrying out a review of aquaculture legislation to provide a current overview of the regulatory framework, first focusing on Europe and then covering the national, regional, and local levels. This revision allows to identify the status of aquaculture innovations such as IMTA systems in the current legislative frameworks of Europe and several Atlantic countries. To do so, in addition to the extensive literature review and workshops, several semi-structured interviews were conducted with different stakeholders such as producers, academics, scientists, policymakers, and experts covering a wide array of diverse actors on the subject to have a better and broader understanding of the aquaculture practices within the contexts that constitute ASTAL's project.
To have diverse perspectives on the matter is crucial for this task’s purpose since it aims to represent all possible angles of this complex regulatory affairs, going beyond an academic or legal dimension.
Moreover, this document also aims to provide information regarding successful aquaculture or IMTA practices worldwide, emphasizing IMTA to ultimately contribute to the policy recommendations dialogue to enhance its development.
