The relation between archaeology, history of ideas, and genealogy in the philosophy of Michel Foucault
Description
This article explores the interconnections between archaeology, history of ideas, and genealogy in Michel Foucault’s philosophical framework, examining how these methodological approaches transform our understanding of historical processes and knowledge formation. Through systematic analysis of Foucault’s key works and secondary literature, this study reveals how archaeology functions as a tool for uncovering epistemic structures that govern discourse within specific historical periods, while genealogy exposes the power dynamics that shape these structures. The research demonstrates how these methodologies, when used in combination, provide powerful analytical frameworks for critiquing established institutional practices across disciplines. The study finds significant applications of these methods in contemporary analyses of digital surveillance, environmental discourse, public health governance. The research also offers a novel cartographic framework for visualizing the evolution of power-knowledge systems, demonstrating how seemingly disparate domains – such as medical classification systems, legal structures, educational practices – operate through similar mechanisms of normalization and exclusion.
