Black Oat (Avena strigosa Schreb.) Ontogenesis and Agronomic Performance in Organic Cropping System and Pannonian Environments

Description

This study examined the influence of agroecological conditions on yield traits of black oat (Avena strigosa Schreb.). Field experiments were performed during the three consecutive years on the two localities in South Banat, in Serbia, which differed in soil type: carbonate chernozem and humogley. The average yields of aboveground biomass, yield and protein content were significantly higher  on chernozem then on humogley, by 13%, 17% and 11%, respectively for all three seasons. The productivity was strongly influenced by different agroecological, soil and climatic Pannonian conditions. The aboveground biomass and grain yield on the humogley soil type indicate that this species can be successfully grown as a cover or fodder crop even in less favorable soil conditions.

This study has been financially supported through the project Redesigning the exploitation of small grains genetic resources towards increased sustainability of grain-value chain and improved farmers’ livelihoods in Serbia and Bulgaria – GRAINEFIT funded in the fourth project cycle of the Benefit-sharing Fund of the International Treaty on PGRFA.
