Designing Alive UI in MAWO: A Case Study on Stimuli-Driven Interface Evolution for Habit Formation

In this work, I present my concept of Alive UI, a dynamic user interface that evolves with user behavior instead of staying static. To explore this idea, I designed and tested MAWO (Mastery & Achievement Workflow Optimizer), a habit tracking app that serves as the case study for this research.

Most habit trackers rely on streaks, checklists, or heavy gamification, but they fail to solve the real problem: the lack of visible progress in the early stages of habit formation. Alive UI is my answer to this challenge. It transforms invisible effort into a living visual narrative of personal growth.

Through my own 45-day journey using MAWO, I documented how Alive UI phases, fragment accumulation, and AI-driven recognition impacted my motivation and consistency. The results showed a clear rise in habit completion (from 71% to 96%), higher motivation, and stronger emotional engagement compared to traditional methods.

This case study demonstrates how Alive UI can be a blueprint for interfaces that don’t just respond to users but grow alongside them. While I tested it through MAWO as a habit tracker, the same principle can be applied to learning apps, fitness tools, mental health platforms, and other systems that need long-term user engagement.
