Winter and early spring CO2 losses in a montane peatland are amplified by foehn winds

This study quantifies the impact of chinook (foehn) wind events on ecosystem respiration (ER) in a montane peatland on the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Chinook winds are warm, dry downslope winds that can raise air temperatures by over 20 °C within hours. ER was measured using eddy covariance at Sibbald fen (1480 m, 130 ha, 51°03’29.38” N, 114°52’11.66” W). Data spans (February 2021 - April 2021) at 30-minute resolution, quality-controlled following standard flux processing protocols. The dataset includes ER, meteorological variables, and chinook event classifications.

Variable dictionary:

  • TimeStamp: Date and time of measurement (MM/DD/YYYY HH:MM, local time)
  • Reco.u50.gC.m2.hh: Ecosystem respiration with u* threshold 0.50 (gC m⁻² half-hour⁻¹, gap-filled)
  • AirTempMetC: Air temperature (°C, meteorological station)
  • RH_Avg: Relative humidity (%, average over measurement period)
  • WindSpeedm_s: Wind speed (m s⁻¹)
  • WDir_Avg: Wind direction (degrees, average over measurement period)
  • Precip_Tot: Precipitation total (mm, accumulated over half-hour)
  • SnowDepth_AvgQC: Snow depth quality controled (m, average over measurement period)
  • T_5cmGapFill: Soil temperature at 5cm depth (°C, gap-filled)
  • T_10cmGapFill: Soil temperature at 10cm depth (°C, gap-filled)
  • T_15cmGapFill: Soil temperature at 15cm depth (°C, gap-filled)
  • T_20cmGapFill: Soil temperature at 20cm depth (°C, gap-filled)
  • ChinookYes: Chinook wind event classification ("Chinook" or "No_chinook")
