Analysis and Design of a Radio Frequency Generator for Gridded Ion Technology Thruster

Description

This paper analyses the RF generator used in Gridded Ion Technology thrusters for electric propulsion. Two architectures, two-stage and single-stage, are proposed and assessed for the generator implementation. Simulation validates the generator's operation. Electric propulsion is highlighted as superior to chemical propulsion, offering higher specific impulse, efficiency, longer mission life, increased payload, and flexibility. The RF generator plays a crucial role in ionizing noble gases, particularly Xenon, to create plasma for thrust generation.

The objective is to analyze the RF generator's electronics, within the Horizon Europe DEEP PPU project, co-funded by the EU.
