EL FETICHE DEL ESPACIO

Resumen
El presente artículo presenta el fetiche por el espacio como la última etapa del capitalismo, lo que deja atrás el
capitalismo mismo, que Walter Benjamin había presentado como una religión. El fetiche por el espacio implica
un desprendimiento del resto del aparato religioso para continuar su camino de manera autónoma. Una serie de
elementos culturales en el imaginario moderno de ciertas sociedades han funcionado como condiciones de
posibilidad de la aparición del fetiche por el espacio. Por un lado, el concepto de libertad negativa, que salió
triunfante del proceso revolucionario estadounidense; por otro lado, el concepto de espacio vital desarrollado en
Alemania a partir del de Heimat; por último, la cultura de los terratenientes del este del Elba. Tres elementos que
tuvieron su confluencia en las llanuras del centro de los Estados Unidos, y que tienen su expresión en el modo de
vida de los suburbs estadounidenses.

Abstract
This article presents the space fetish as the last stage of capitalism, which leaves behind capitalism itself, which
Walter Benjamin had presented as a religion. The fetish for space implies a detachment from the rest of the
religious apparatus in order to continue its path autonomously. A series of cultural elements in the modern
imaginary of certain societies have functioned as conditions of possibility for the appearance of the fetish for
space. On the one hand, the concept of negative freedom, which emerged triumphant from the American
revolutionary process; on the other hand, the concept of living space developed in Germany from that of Heimat;
finally, the culture of the landowners east of the Elbe. Three elements that converged in the central plains of the
United States, and which find their expression in the way of life of the American suburbs.
