The term Qingbai (Chinese 青白, qīngbái) literally translates as “green-white” or “bluish-white” and refers to the distinctive glaze colour — transparent yet tinged with a cool bluish-green tone over a pure white porcelain body. This effect was achieved through wood-fired reduction firing, where the minimal iron content in the glaze produced a “jade-like” cool hue. From the 18th century, the related term Yingqing (影青, yǐngqīng, “shadow-green”) was also used for the same category of wares.

Qingbai originated in the Northern Song dynasty (960–1127), flourished in the Southern Song (1127–1279), and continued into the Yuan period (1279–1368). Qingbai (qīngbái, “bluish-white”) porcelain, produced primarily at Jingdezhen and Hutian kilns during the Song (960–1279) and Yuan (1279–1368) dynasties, is characterized by its pure white body and transparent glaze with a subtle bluish-green hue achieved in a wood-fired reduction atmosphere. The examined ewer measures 19 cm in height, 13 cm in maximum width, with a 7 cm spout and 6 cm mouth and base diameter. It features a deeply carved floral design (likely peony), smooth jade-like surface, and glaze free of bubbles, iridescence, or restoration.
Colorimetric measurements reveal slight tonal variation between flat and relief areas (LCh: flat L = 62.0, C = 10.2, h° = 84.8; relief L = 65.2, C = 3.1, h° = 95.3), consistent with glaze pooling in incised zones.
