In vivo comparison of recording capabilities between PEDOT:PSS/DES and PEDOT:PSS coated electrodes

Description

This dataset contains electrophysiological recordings from in vivo experiments conducted on rat sciatic nerves to compare the performance of PEDOT:PSS and PEDOT:PSS/DES electrode coatings.

Each nerve underwent a recording protocol lasting approximately 1 hour, consisting of the following phases:

1) Spontaneous and pain-evoked activity: 5-minute baseline recording, followed by repeated mechanical stimulation of the tibialis anterior muscle using a needle press to evoke nociceptive responses. No electrical stimulation was applied in this phase.

2) Electrical stimulation protocol: Stimulation was delivered through the implanted cuffs in monopolar configuration using single pulses (100 µs pulse width). Amplitude was increased incrementally: 5–10 µA (1 µA steps), followed by 15, 20, and 30 µA. Each stimulation trial included a 10-second baseline and 10 stimulation pulses at 1 Hz (1-second inter-pulse interval) starting with one cuff followed by 10 pulses by the other cuff. Cuffs were alternated across trials to compare responses.

Each file corresponds to one recording or stimulation trial for a specific rat, nerve, and protocol phase (e.g., spontaneous, evoked, or stimulation).

Each .pkl file contains data from three INTAN ports:

  • Port A: PEDOT:PSS/DES cuff (used for stimulation and recording) 
  • Port B: PEDOT:PSS cuff (used for stimulation and recording)
  • Port C: EMG needle electrode (used only during stimulation trials to monitor muscle responses

Important usage notes:

  • For recording trials (spontaneous or evoked activity), only Ports A and B are relevant. Port C can be ignored.
  • For stimulation trials, Port C contains EMG signals of interest. Ports A and B were used only for stimulation and may not contain meaningful data.
  • Channels with impedance >100 kΩ were excluded from the recordings.
