Book of Abstracts | Women's Communication Rights in the Digital Era: The Beijing Platform for Action 30 Years On
Authors/Creators
Description
This Book of Abstracts brings together the contributions presented at the international conference Women’s Communication Rights in the Digital Era: the Beijing Platform for Action 30 Years On, held on 18–19 September 2025 at Lusófona University in Lisbon, Portugal.
Organised by ICNOVA (NOVA University Lisbon), CICANT (Lusófona University), and ECREA’s Gender, Sexuality and Communication Section, with the support of the Digital Culture and Communication Section, the event marks three decades since the adoption of the Beijing Platform for Action and its call to advance women’s rights in and through the media (Section J).
Despite significant progress, gender inequalities in media persist — including underrepresentation in leadership, stereotypical portrayals, and the growth of digital misogyny. The conference addresses these challenges by fostering critical dialogue and encouraging collective strategies for change.
This volume includes abstracts from scholars, policymakers, media professionals, and activists, covering topics such as:
• Feminist media policies
• AI and algorithmic discrimination
• Digital harassment and violence
• Intersectional perspectives on media access and representation
• Alternative and feminist media practices
Together, these contributions offer a rich and diverse overview of current debates, emerging research, and activist approaches to gender and communication rights in the digital age.
