Abstract: To establish a reliable diagnostic protocol for the scientific attribution of authentic Ru yao ceramics from the Song Dynasty, it is essential to consolidate visual, microstructural, and technological features as recorded in primary research literature. This article compiles core diagnostic traits — including glaze stratification, micro-craquelure, polishing marks, support scars, and the fish scale effect (鱼鳞線 Yu lin wen) — substantiated by macro/micro images and referenced scholarly studies.
1. Introduction Authenticating Ru yao 汝端錢 ceramics requires a synthesis of historical, visual, and materials science evidence. Based on primary Chinese and international sources, this article outlines the scientifically observable features used to distinguish genuine Northern Song Ru ware from later imitations.
2. Fish Scale Effect (鱼鳞線, Yu lin wen) Based on Zhang F. et al. (2002), the "fish scale effect" is defined as a surface texture where the glaze exhibits:

Wavy micro-stratification

Overlapping glaze segments with soft transitions

Visible granular earthenware structure underneath
This layered texture results from controlled glaze contraction and micro-phase separation. It is one of the hallmarks of genuine Ru yao glaze and cannot be convincingly replicated by later kiln systems.

3. Macrostructure of the Base: Kiln Support Marks In genuine Ru yao wares, kiln supports often left triple-point marks (sometimes in triangular or tripod arrangement). 4. Polished Footring (磨光身) A diagnostic trait of authentic Ru yao is the finely striated and polished footring. As seen in macro photography, the biscuit edge shows rotary polishing marks and a distinctive reddish-beige clay body. Conclusion: Authenticating Ru yao requires analysis of multiple interconnected indicators: microstructural layering, surface texturing, base finishing, and kiln scars. This article presents key features for scientific diagnosis, supported by primary literature.
