Description

Amorphous (without a crystal system) and crystalline gemstones attract attention with their unique colors, shapes and physico-chemical properties. Thanks to these qualities, they have been used for adornment and to express social status In this study, the historical development and current applications of the cabochon form—one of the traditional techniques used in gemstone shaping—are examined. Beginning with ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia and Anatolia, the symbolic and ornamental uses of gemstones are reviewed. The study focuses on contemporary gemstone processing practices in Turkey, particularly through the case of red and green opals extracted in the Seydiler region of Afyon Province. These stones were shaped into cabochon form using cutting, grinding, and polishing methods in a professional lapidary workshop. The article also explores the role of cabochon gemstones in Turkish jewelry-making, emphasizing their significance in both craft and cultural heritage. In addition, they were also preferred for various social and religious purposes, such as warding off evil forces, protecting against magic, healing, providing peace, and bringing abundance. Jewelry preferences, dating from ancient times to the present day, have undergone a continuous evolution in both the context of craftsmanship and art, in line with the conditions of the period and cultural structures. Archaeological findings reveal that jewelry production in the past was carried out with simple hand tools. In contrast, today, jewelry making, influenced by technological advancements, has become a highly developed and indispensable Turkish handicraft. Throughout history, jewelry has been used for a variety of purposes, including adornment, symbolizing faith, and status. Over time, new functions have been added to these, and jewelry has continued to adapt to changing social and cultural needs. Gemstone carving and the production of gemstone jewelry began historically with the production of round beads shaped by drilling. This study examines the historical development of cabochons, used from ancient times to the present, and their current applications in Turkey. In this study, red and green opal samples, particularly those obtained from the Afyon-Seydiler region, were processed into cabochon shapes through cutting, grinding, and polishing processes at the gemstone processing workshop at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University. Historically, gemstone craftsmanship developed in Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Anatolia, and this process was carried over into jewelry within the scope of Turkish handicrafts. The aim of this study is to emphasize the historical and cultural significance of the cabochon form, document its contemporary processing processes, and demonstrate its place in traditional Turkish jewelry.
