Franco Basaglia never denied the existence of mental illness but said he did not know what it is. This Socratic/Basaglian position, this knowledge of not knowing what madness is, has great human, cultural and philosophical value. Only by dealing with madness can philosophical thought develop in a fully original way. Only that which – without fear of appearing madness – manages to settle on the border between reason and unreason can be, in the strictest and highest sense, philosophy.
