Disseminating and Implementing IIIF over the Long Term: The Case of Biblissima
Description
Slide deck of a talk given at the DH2025 annual ADHO conference “Building Access and Accessibility, Open Science to all Citizens.” as part of a panel entitled "A Decade of IIIF: Advancing Open Science and Accessibility through Interoperable Digital Heritage" (NOVA FCSH, Lisbon, 18 July 2025).
Abstract (En)
This presentation will focus on the overall situation of IIIF in France, and more specifically on its uses for medieval studies through the example of Biblissima, an “Observatory of Written Cultures, from Clay to Print”, based in Paris. This large-scale national project is indeed at the forefront of the promotion and dissemination of IIIF standards in France since its inception in 2012. In this talk we shall outline Biblissima's achievements and initiatives on that front through training or consulting activities among French research teams and cultural heritage institutions (especially libraries and archives). In addition, IIIF standards play a central role in its digital data infrastructure and are one of the cornerstones of its interoperability. Thus we shall describe how IIIF APIs are currently being used and implemented in the context of Biblissima as a whole and how they meet the needs of historians of texts.
