Description

Abstract (English)

As part of the two-year research project ‘Development of an innovative PV module based on standard insulating glass’, a new type of photovoltaic module was designed based on commercially available insulating glass. The aim of the development was to optimise the design in terms of improved recyclability and sustainable use of the materials used. A key element of the innovation is the selective fastening of the PV strings inside the insulating glass. This design allows the materials used, including glass, silicon and silver, to be separated by type. By
dispensing with conventional encapsulation materials that make recycling difficult, efficient recovery of the valuable raw materials is ensured. This contributes significantly to promoting a sustainable material cycle and is in line with the principles of the circular economy. Another key development goal was electrical transmission through the insulating glass unit. The electricity generated by the integrated photovoltaic cells inside the insulating glass must be conducted to the outside without compromising the integrity of the insulating glass seal. Both mechanical and electrical requirements must be taken into account to ensure the long-term stability of the system. As part of the research project, a functional module system was developed that uses standard insulating glass to provide mechanical stability and ensure reliable electrical contact.
This innovative module was presented to the public for the first time at the Bau 2025 trade fair. Based on the research results achieved, the aim is to develop an automated production line based on a standard insulating glass production line. This scaling is intended to enable economical series production of the innovative PV module. In addition, further concepts for optimising the electrical feed-through were developed during the project, which are to be implemented in future development cycles.
The progress achieved represents a significant milestone in the development of sustainable and recyclable photovoltaic modules. The targeted integration of PV technology into standard insulating glass opens up new fields of application, particularly in building integration (Building Integrated Photovoltaics, BIPV).
