Dataset for "A Detailed Characterization of Starlink One-way Delay", ACM LEONET 2025

Description

This is the data used in the paper "A Detailed Characterization of Starlink One-way Delay" By Garcia, Sundberg, Brunstrom and published at ACM LEONET 2025.

The data file contains One-way delay (OWD) measurements performed on the Starlink downlink (DL) and uplink (UL), as considered from a Starlink user,  using an unobstructed Starlink user terminal located in Karlstad, Sweden, during April 2025.

The sending and reception were performed on two Ethernet ports of a single hardware timestamping network interface card (NIC) which uses a single on-NIC oscillator, thus ensuring that send and receive clocks are synchronized.

The data is stored in 1437 files for DL and UL respectively.

The file name is an approximate identifer of the timing of each individual run, not necessarily precise on a single second level.  One file is with DL data, ending with _dl, and one for UL data, ending with_ul.

The three columns in each file are  seq_nr,  dl/ul_t0, and owd_t0_t1.

seq_nr is the sequence number assigned to the UDP probe packet. Note that a missing sequence number cannot necessarily be interpreted as a packet loss, since occasionally the HW timestamp sending time readout can fail, and then that sequence number will not be included in the data.

ul/dl_t0 is the HW timestamp of the sending instance, expressed as number of nanoseconds since the experiment run start.

owd_t0_t1 is the OWD number of nanoseconds between send time and receive time.
