Description
Abstract (English)
Foucault’s reading of Plato in his last four years represents a significant shift from his previous works. Plato, along with Socrates, is the author who links parrhesia to philosophy. For Plato, philosophy is above all spirituality, something that cannot be translated into formulas or written doctrine, but can only be learned by practicing it within a specific way of life. And precisely the intrinsic connection between philosophy and politics, or between philosophy and reality, the reality of philosophy itself, lies in its very nature, in its own spirituality. In this way, Plato came to occupy a central place in the genealogy of the critical attitude. Foucault converged in this reading with the one offered by Simone Weil, both finding in the Greek thinker a unique example of the union between spirituality and philosophy, between philosophy, self-transformation, and transformation of the world.
